Robert’s Story (AKA: How did I end up here?)
Remember the book Everything I Know I Learned in Kindergarten? Well, most everything I know I learned from trading baseball cards. I parlayed my meager earnings selling candy bars door to door into promising rookie cards. Suffice it to say, I took my baseball cards seriously. I would study the stats of the top prospects in the farm leagues to gain insights into who would flourish in the big leagues. My “go to” category was rookie prospect cards. These were the guys who had not yet been called up to the majors. This was the baseball card equivalent of IPO’s. Once they became “hot rookies,” I would hit the sell button. This strategy panned out reasonably well. By the age of fourteen, I had my own incorporated business, Sport Card City. I switched my inventory from hot prospects to blue chip hall of famers. I was able to eke out a nice living in my teenage years, which means I made enough money to buy skateboards and cool sunglasses.
This crash course in “trading” would prove invaluable to my ultimate career. I started working for Waterhouse Securities as an intern during my freshman year in college. With all of my experience, Waterhouse gave me a position in the mailroom, literally licking stamps and filing stock certificates. Over the next several years, I went on to become its head derivatives trader for the West Coast. Today, I still love baseball (Go Dodgers!) but these days my research is devoted to finding the best combination of investments for our clients. Although my mint 1971 Steve Garvey rookie card wound up being a pretty good investment, it turns out the stock market is a much better place to be than sports memorabilia.

Jeremy’s Story (AKA: How did I end up here?)
My first job was picking up snails in the garden so that they would not eat my mother’s flowers. She agreed to pay me 2 cents each. Mom almost had a heart attack when I found 100 of them and she had to cough up $2.00. Talk about starting at the bottom! Anyway, I then had successively more lucrative jobs as a paperboy, busboy, cook and then ice cream man.
My life changing epiphany occurred when my father asked me if I wanted to invest some of my bar mitzvah money in the stock market. Why not, right? The first day, the account grew by $100. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. My world was forever changed. Unfortunately, the next day the account declined by $100 and I was ready to throw myself off the nearest bridge. I like to say, I made my mistakes early. Many people learn their first lessons in investing by trial and error…and I was no exception.
30 years later, I have the good fortune of spending my days helping others maximize their hard earned savings. Money is the greatest labor saving device ever invented. It can help people reduce stress and live a life that they love. This is definitely the right career for me. I love my job and the 150 or so friends that I also get to call my clients.

She has degrees in Accounting and Management Information Systems from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and has received an advanced certification in financial planning. She holds the FINRA Series 7, 63 & 66 licenses as well as fixed and variable insurance licenses.
Christina's Story (AKA: How Did I End Up Here?)
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, where I was very active in sports. I competed at the national inline speed skating competition in Buffalo, NY when I was fourteen. Yes, Lisa and I met on the speed skating circuit and we have been friends for twenty years. I also played competitive soccer throughout college.
My first job was at a local frozen yogurt shop. I was so good at serving yogurt that another local business lured me away with a higher offer (an additional $.50 an hour). From an early age, my dad always taught me the value of hard work and saving. When I was eighteen, he gave me two choices: pay rent or start contributing to an IRA. It didn’t take a CFP to make that decision. I chose the IRA and have been saving and investing ever since.
In college, I combined my work ethic with a healthy dose of nepotism (thanks, big bro!) to land jobs with a number of celebrity chefs: Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, and Roy Yamaguchi. So, lucky for me, I was never the struggling college student. In fact, I was able to buy my first house and my first rental property while still in college.
After college, I used the poor man’s version of a career coach, a book called The Top 300 Jobs in America. I came to the pages on being a financial advisor and immediately knew that was what I wanted to do. I feel blessed to be able to wake up every day and help my clients navigate through life’s financial maze (Have you seen the cover of our book?) and allow them to find peace of mind. I am truly grateful for the honor of being my clients’ trusted advisor.

Jennifer’s Professional Background:
Jennifer has worked as a financial planner and investment advisor for more than fifteen years. Prior to working with SureVest, she was a partner at Guardian Capital Group. Jennifer is a ChFC candidate whose primary focus is helping clients integrate their investment, tax, and estate planning. She is also a board member of the Executive Women’s Golf Association in New Jersey.
Jennifer’s Story: (AKA: How Did I End Up Here?)
I spent most of my childhood with my brother and two male cousins. It was no wonder I was a tomboy in those days. I ran track, went fishing, and played golf. My favorite time of year was summer, which I typically spent with my grandparents on the lake in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin. My grandparents were a huge influence on me. My grandmother taught me the power of positive thinking and Grandpa taught me how not to spend money.
At the age of fifteen, I started working in a real estate office (okay, yes, I had to be driven to work). By sixteen, I was doing the books and paying the bills for the entire office. I also liked to write in those days and became the youngest editor in the history of my high school newspaper.
Approximately a lifetime later (after several more interesting jobs), I found my way to the financial services industry. It was 1998, and an investment advisory firm was so impressed with my background that it gave me a job cold calling (yuck). Eventually, I earned a number of licenses and worked my way up to compliance and operations. Once I started to work with clients, I never looked back. Nothing is more rewarding than helping clients make important financial decisions.
I was also fortunate to meet my husband in 2007. He married me despite my inability to cook, clean, or sew. I think he married me for my financial skills and ability to make reservations.
Jennifer's Fun Facts:
Hobbies: Golf, yoga, travel
Favorite places: Maui, southern California, Nice (sunshine and beaches)
Favorite music: Country
Favorite foods: Bagels from Glen Corner, anything chocolate from Rockland Bakery
Great memory: Getting a hole in one – golfing with my dad

Clay has worked in a variety of Information Technology roles over the past fifteen years. Prior to joining Surevest, he spent seven years as the lead network engineer and developer for a managed service provider firm that served small and medium size businesses throughout the greater Phoenix area. Clay has architected network infrastructures large and small and holds Microsoft MCITP-SA, Cisco CCNA, Red Hat RHCSA, and CompTIA A+, Network + Security +, and several other industry-specific certifications.
Clay’s Story (AKA: How did I end up here?)
From an early age, I loved tearing things apart to find out how they worked. I was fascinated by all things mechanical: bicycles, stereos, cars, and computers. I may not have been able to put them all back together properly, but those early experiences have served me well. (Sorry, Mom about that toaster. I’m still not sure why that never worked again.)
When I was in high school, I was thrilled to find out that people would actually pay me to take their computer apart, fix it, and put it back together. I started hanging flyers on doorknobs, offering Clay’s PC repair services. I even delivered a 17” CRT monitor by bicycle once! As my skill level increased, I took on larger and larger jobs. I started my own computer services company and became the “computer guy” for over two dozen companies. In fact, that is how I got to know and love Surevest.
In 2013, I jumped at the opportunity to become Surevest’s full-time Chief Technology Officer. Surevest is constantly striving to use technology to its fullest potential. I love the challenge of supporting our team with the technology to ensure that our clients’ experiences are the best in the industry.

Tina’s Professional Background:
Tina joins us from Make-A-Wish® America where she worked on the Corporate Alliances team. In her role she oversaw a portfolio of corporate sponsors which included American Airlines, GameStop and Avis to name a few. Her responsibilities included launching cause-marketing campaigns, identifying opportunities to engage her sponsors’ employees in the mission and promoting the company’s CSR activities. Prior to joining Make-A-Wish, Tina spent 8 years with American Airlines and helped implement the airline’s philanthropic programs following their merger with US Airways. This work included expanding their scholarship program, developing corporate giving guidelines and funding strategies, as well as launching the employee volunteer program called the Do Crew. She started her career at US Airways as an executive assistant supporting an executive vice president where she received increasing responsibilities including serving as a media spokesperson and writing for the airline’s internal communication channels.
How did I end up here:
A few weeks after I graduated from Arizona State University with my B.A. in Broadcasting I was on my way to New York City to intern with MTV. I landed in the city not having ever visited and immediately fell in love with the energy, the abundant restaurants and endless places to sit on a bench to just watch the world go by. Shortly before my internship concluded I was offered a job to be a casting associate for one of their reality shows . With a return ticket home I came back to Phoenix to get some things in order only to discover the show’s contract hadn’t been renewed and it was a gamble as to whether or not I’d still have a job. Having spent a summer without bringing in any income, and student loans becoming due, I opted to stay firmly planted in the desert. I would later regret this decision as the show went on for many more seasons! I did however get a job casting locally for another MTV show and as I was filming casting videos I saw the US Airways building and remembered they merged with America West only a month after my return. Their headquarters was located close by and I thought, “if I work for an airline I can see New York whenever I want.” I applied and three days later had a job serving as an executive assistant to a senior leader. I was incredibly lucky to have found a boss who was willing to show me the ropes of the corporate world as I had zero experience – and I mean nada, I hadn’t even scheduled a meeting or sent an office email. I truly believe things happen for a reason and I went on to work in marketing, corporate communications and community relations – more importantly I was able to travel the world and visited New York at least once a year. Following the airline’s merger with American Airlines I elected not to relocate to Dallas but remained for nearly two years launching their community programs. I would later take a position working at Make-A-Wish America where I could continue working with my American team by working on behalf of a nonprofit they supported. It was a great job with an incredible mission and I value the work I did for them each day.
When I was initially approached by Robert Luna to join the Surevest team I was immediately excited for the opportunity. Robert explained my role would be to expand and improve the overall client experience within the firm. Creating a personalized experience for each client which allows them to fulfill their own personal mission, is a very rewarding position. I am excited to begin developing new services for our long-time existing clients as well as the opportunity to work with new clients entering our firm.
