For the past couple of months, I was here at Surevest, as an intern – this was my third summer in a row working with the team. You might have seen a few of the articles that I wrote, whether they were on a few of our clients, or on financial planning topics such as where to relocate in retirement. This summer I was given the opportunity to put both of my majors – Economics and Political Science – to good use. I performed a variety of tasks this summer, which included researching and writing articles about financial planning topics with Jeremy, talking over stocks and analyzing portfolios with Robert and Luis, and overseeing the weekly Chirp newsletters with Tina. I was glad to have an internship that used my critical thinking and analytical skills that are honed in Economics alongside the ability to gather information and synthesize an idea into writing that I learn in Political Science.
As I go into my senior year at the University of Michigan, I am still not sure exactly what I want to do after I graduate, but I know that whatever I end up doing, this internship, and working alongside everyone here at Surevest, has prepared me well for the real world. I know that I want to work in business, it’s just a question of the capacity. Whether I end up working in finance or corporate law, I know that my passion for investing and learning about complex financial topics will lead me to a fulfilling career that I will enjoy working in every day. My old martial arts teacher used to tell me that, “if you love what you do, then you’ll never work a day in your life,” and I believe that I will find that in a career similar to the one I experienced here for eight weeks this summer.
I can’t thank everyone at Surevest enough, not only for giving me this opportunity, but for taking the time to teach me and answer all of my many questions. I am excited to take the knowledge I gained from this internship and apply it to this school year and the career that I have afterwards!
