About four years ago I was somehow convinced to start running. My goal was a 5K by the end of that summer and although I was slow – I did it! After not having even run five blocks in my entire life, I was less amazed that I accomplished my goal and instead more amazed by the group of women I met along the way. By the way, I totally blame Stacey Belhumer (the daughter of a long-time client) for introducing me to Jersey Women Strong and starting all of this!
Jersey Women Strong (JWS) is northern New Jersey’s largest all-women’s running and multi-sport club and is founded and led by Dana White. As important as JWS is to every member, they are just as important, if not more, to the community.
Every year JWS hosts a turkey drive to benefit the Center for Hope and Safety. Center for Hope and Safety is dedicated to assisting victims (and their children) of domestic violence. Last year, Dana White and JWS members collected enough funds to deliver turkey, sides, pies and gift cards to over 120 families.
JWS sponsors a summer race that benefits Center for Safety and Change in Rockland. This organization provides shelter and supportive services that empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse and other crimes. Dana brings together 80+ runners for this amazing race.
Most recently I spent some time with fellow JWS members packing lunches for Project KIND, an organization that creates opportunities and build support systems for those experiencing homelessness. On this day Barbara Grenz-Eckert gathered us as she had been SACKed and volunteers gratefully provided over 120 sack lunches to be delivered the next day to Newark’s homeless. JWS gathers members once each month for this worthy cause.
I’m grateful to Dana and all the Jersey Women Strong members for all they do for each other and the community.
